STEAAM at Central

Springfield Central High School's academic program engages STEAAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Advanced Studies, and Mathematics.

STEM:
Students are able to work with cutting-edge technologies that enhance their learning in all subject areas. The new science wing provides state-of-the-art labs and STEM enrichment courses allow all students to explore a vast array of hands-on learning opportunities in STEM fields. Central's Aeronautic Engineering program (JAFROTC) has consistently ranked among the top ROTC programs in the country. The arts offer opportunities in digital composition and computer-driven graphic arts. The updated TV Studio enables students to learn the art of digital video production and editing on the same equipment used by professionals in video-production fields.

Advanced Studies:
Central provides increased opportunities for all students to participate in academic coursework that prepares them for college and the workforce. The STEAAM-focused academic program is aligned with 21st Century academic rigor and expectations. Students are equipped with the required skills to be successful not only as students but as employees and citizens as well. Central offers 21 AP classes, the most offered in any high school in the state. Through carefully planned professional development, teachers undertake critical scaffolding efforts for incoming 9th graders that enable them to work successfully in these advanced level courses.

Visual and Performing Arts:
The arts remain incredibly important in the 21st Century; Central provides students access to several different disciplines of the Visual and Performing Arts to effectively communicate ideas and values in the modern world. Central's theater program offers two major productions each year, including the Fall Festival of Shakespeare in collaboration with Shakespeare and Company and the annual Spring Musical.

Students also may study vocal or instrumental music, increasing their familiarity with multiple styles of music and their respective performing techniques. The Madrigal Singers is an advanced chorus that is often invited to perform around Springfield and consists of auditioned students who often earn competitive spots in regional and state-level ensembles. Band students have opportunities to perform in multiple high-level ensembles including the often award-winning Marching Band or Indoor Percussion Ensemble, as well as the select Wind Ensemble.

Those interested in the visual arts may study at a fundamental or advanced level, specializing in subjects such as ceramics, drawing and painting, digital photography, computer art, sculpture, mural painting, and printmaking. Student artwork of any medium may be seen showcased around the entire school.
